Online Classes for School Year 2012-13

Beginning Foundations in Writing
For students grades 4 – 6 with little or no experience in writing, this class is designed to introduce the foundational skills of basic composition: note-taking and summarizing. From this starting point, we will be learning and practicing a variety of writing forms: research reports, narrative stories, and essay writing from prompts. Students will have an opportunity to “play” with language – using strong words, vivid imagery, and sophisticated sentence structures.

Grammar work and vocabulary will also be covered.
Students will receive positive feedback on their writing. The emphasis is encouragement rather than evaluation.

We will meet on Tuesday mornings, 9:00 – 10:30 PST.

Intermediate Foundations in Writing
This writing class for students grades 5 - 8 will build on the foundational skills of basic writing: note-taking and summarizing. From this starting point, we will be learning and practicing a variety of composition forms: research reports, story critiques, narrative stories, and essays, including writing from prompts. This class moves at a faster pace and we cover more material than the beginning class. Students will have an opportunity to “play” with language – using strong words, vivid imagery, sophisticated sentence structures and timely transitions.

Grammar work and vocabulary will also be covered.
Students will receive personalized feedback on their writing.

We will meet on Tuesdays, 11:00 – 12:30 PST.

Introduction to the Research Essay
This high school level class will introduce students to a standard in academic writing: the research essay. This essay format is useful across the content areas: from history to humanities – from biology to political science. We will spend the first few weeks in an “essay boot camp,” reviewing thesis development and support, and paragraph structure. From there students will move beyond their own opinions and learn how to support their theses with research. The class will cover the research process, proper citation methods, and extended length essay format. Students will begin with simple, whole-class projects, and end the year composing a 10-page research essay.

This class is ideally designed for high school students who are familiar with basic essay structure.

Students will receive personalized feedback and evaluations of their writing.

We will meet on Tuesday afternoons, 1:00 – 3:00 PST.

Calendar: , All classes will start September 11. There will be a total of 28 classes with a break in between semesters.
