PAL Reading will teach all the phonograms that a first and second grade student is expected to know. The more advanced ones (for example: ough) will also be touched on, but mastery is not expected.
All About Spelling comes alongside a little later to ensure that the phonograms are all mastered both for reading and spelling. Thus, they get the phonograms in relation to learning words and for reading, and then again to ensure that your student has mastered each and every one.
Remember, teaching reading is anything but neat and simple. It is an incredibly complex process of memorizing phonics and applying its inconsistent rules in order to read. Many children manage this without a lot of effort, but some children find it incredibly baffling, often due to a learning disorder or simply difficulty memorizing.
What PAL does is present the phonograms in many different modes. The games and activities ensure that your child gets many repetitions every day to help him master the phonics and rules. The personification of the phonograms also helps your student see them as his friends. The lessons are short and snappy so that your student does not get bored, yet they are also so engaging that he will beg for more.
