These two-hour classes for students Grades 2-10 will present the Structure & Style Unit I/II idea of key word outlining, along with selected stylistic techniques. (Grade levels are approximate; no previous experience necessary.) Class size is limited to 30 participants.

Session 1: 8:30–10:00 AM Reaching the Reluctant Writer
Many children really do not like to write. Why? This workshop will answer that basic question and teach a specific and successful method of separating the complex process of writing into the smallest possible steps, making it possible for even the most reluctant writer to willingly produce short but complete compositions.


Session 2: 10:15–11:45 AM Teaching Boys & Other Children Who Would Rather Make Forts All Day(Note: Topic was changed 8/4/10)
Research shows that not only do boys and girls respond differently to similar environments, children in general like to do what they can do, and they hate to do what they think they cannot do. Citing several credible sources, Andrew Pudewa offers insight into specific ways you can create relevancy for children as you teach them academic as well as life skills. Available as a DVD or an MP3 audio download.


Session 3: 12:45–2:15 PM Spelling & the Brain
Many children (and some adults) have difficulty learning to spell, but the difficulty may not be with the student so much as with the method of presentation. In this workshop, find out how spelling information is most efficiently stored in the brain, and why. With the greater insight into the nature of spelling and neurological function presented in this workshop, the parent/teacher will be well-equipped to meet the needs of all their children, not just the "naturally" good spellers.


Session 4: 2:30–4:15 PM The Four Deadly Errors of Teaching Writing
We've all suffered it at one time or another: Frustration about writing assignments. Either on the receiving end, or perhaps now on the giving end, there can be a few distinctly discouraging aspects to teaching and being taught writing. The tough questions include: What to correct and how to give a grade? How much help is too much? Isn't the assignment clear enough? Why don't students find their own errors? Learn and avoid four teaching mistakes that contribute to this frustration: Overcorrecting, Holding Back Help, Unclear Assignments, & Over-Expectation.

High School Essay Intensive –
SAT Essay & College Application Essays

A one-day seminar for high school students and teachers

The High School Essay Intensive class is an excellent way to get immediate experience and inside tips on how to do your best on the timed, 25 minute response to a prompt required on the SAT and/or ACT tests. Participants will actually write two full essays, carefully study and then apply the College Board evaluation criteria to sample essays, while receiving a detailed booklet of resources and lesson plans for continued practice.

Additionally, students will learn special structure and style tools for use in composing the college application "personal essay"—an entirely different type of writing task. The complete process will be presented: choosing the question, creating the outline, and polishing a final version. Participants will leave with a clear concept of the task, their own outline for an actual personal essay, and several new tricks and techniques to add to their repertoire.

Although this seminar is specifically designed for those who will be taking the SAT/ACT or submitting college applications within the next 1-2 years (and especially those teaching such students), it is also useful for general writing practice, tools and tips. It is open to all students, regardless of their experience with IEW courses or materials. A lot of actual writing is done during this six-hour class.

What's the difference between a "report" and an "essay"? How do we help a student move from simply reporting facts to the more sophisticated skill of using facts in order to support an opinion? With several different essay models and a gradual method of building the analytical writer, you can feel confident in training your child to be an excellent essayist, even starting at the elementary level!


Session 3: 12:45–2:15 PM Fairy Tales and the Moral Imagination †
Are fairy tales beneficial, even important, for Christian students? In this session we will discuss several basic themes in fairy tales and traditional children's literature (goodness, truth, beauty, hope, honesty, wishes, etc.) as well as key archetypes of literature and their importance to the moral imagination. With the confusion surrounding modern fantasy writing, many parents feel uncertain in discerning the good and important literature from misleading and confusing books, stories, and movies.


Session 4: 2:30–4:15 PM Conquering Corrupt Culture by Raising Christian Communicators †
We, as Christian homeschoolers, must have more than just "nice" reasons to homeschool—it's not about academics; it's about reclaiming Western Civilization for Jesus Christ, and the choices we make every day have eternal significance as we strive to raise up a generation of young people who will be empowered to communicate the truth in a world of lies and lead their clueless peers through the coming crises.
